Web Column (and ranting)

Here’s my latest web column:

Job market for immigrants lacks common sense and fairness

(also available at www.wernerpatels.com)

The reason why I wrote this column was that I felt it necessary to come up with a response to a really stupid article by Rudyard Griffiths in the National Post. In it, he argued that immigrants should be kept out of Canada (and the country’s labour market) because they are only a burden on the public purse. What Griffiths didn’t mention was that many of them are a burden only because Canadian employers regularly discriminate against immigrants and force them to work in low-paying jobs, rather than in the fields they’re trained for.

The way highly-qualified immigrants are treated in Canada is beyond the pale and requires urgent reforms.

  1. Hi Werner,
Sorry to be off topic, but can I ask a quick question please? Are you involved in the Labourist.org site? Was curious as to who it might be, and thought of you, as sharing a location for whois records (Calgary), and sharing an interest in UK politics, particularly in Labour, but from a non-tribal perspecitve. Sorry to bother you if you’re not – and I’d recommend looking at it if you didn’t see it yet – a very interesting development in UK politics that I’m not at all sure how to view yet.
    Best wishes, John

  2. sorry – and C: sharing a preference for WordPress…

  3. Thanks for the tip. No, I am not involved with that site, but I just gave it a quick glance, and I think I will be contributing articles in future.

  4. D’oh! Thanks for that, Werner – So much for my ‘tec skills! It is interesting, and actually has a lot of good-practice pointers for the original site they’re taking off – http://www.labourlist.org – but a whole bunch of things scare me about it at the moment, and I won’t be using it myself until I’ve been able to still the doubts. Shame it’s not you, as that would have cleared up a good few of them :)
    Best wishes, John
